While we have all been living through unprecedented social change during the COVID-19 pandemic, we know that continuity of care and tracking your health risks is important at all times. To better serve your needs, and accommodate your health and safety, we have introduced our new virtual preventive health assessment (PHA), and hundreds of patients have already benefited from it across Canada.
The virtual preventive health assessment gives you the opportunity to complete some assessments by video call and/or by phone, and is offered to continue to maintain physical distancing in line with current regulatory guidelines.
Do you have questions about the virtual preventive health assessment? We’ve got you covered. Please refer to the FAQ below for questions and answers regarding this service.
Why is a virtual preventive health being offered?
In accordance with Federal and Provincial guidelines to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, Medisys is offering the optional virtual preventive assessment as a temporary solution to reduce clinic traffic and to make use of telehealth services in order to serve our clients in the safest manner. Most steps of the preventive health assessment can be completed virtually, and in the comfort of your own home. Any part of the preventive health assessment that cannot be completed virtually will be made up at a later date, or scheduled in-person if deemed essential by your physician.
This is a temporary solution and we are working hard to return to normal operations and complete in-person preventive assessments as soon as it is safe to do so.
How do I book the virtual part of my preventive health assessment?
A member of our team will reach out to you when it is time to schedule your annual preventive health assessment, or before your previously scheduled appointment. You will be given the option of completing a part of your preventive health assessment virtually, or delaying your appointment until it is safe to be completed in-person.
If you choose to complete a part of your PHA virtually, please note that your virtual appointments may be scheduled over multiple days.
Which parts of my preventive health assessment can I do virtually?
The tests included in your preventive health assessment vary depending upon your age, gender, personal risk factors, protocol and province.
- Consultation with your physician
- Nutrition Coaching
- Fitness assessment
- Laboratory testing
- Physical examination with your physician
- Vaccination update
- Body composition test
- Cardiovascular assessment
- Any additional test prescribed by the physician such as X-ray or additional laboratory testing
What will my virtual physician appointment look like?
Your appointment will begin with a complete review of your current health, including concerns identified during your chart review. This will be followed by a discussion of your health risk factors. These risk factors are determined through your personal health questionnaire, your health history and your health review. You will then have a chance to ask questions regarding specific health concerns you may have, and discuss any prescription renewal needs.
What will my virtual dietitian consultation look like?
During a 45-minute nutrition coaching session, a registered dietitian will identify the areas that can be improved, based on your goals, medical and family history, eating habits and lifestyle. From weight management, optimizing energy levels and meal planning, to sports nutrition, cholesterol and diabetes management, and more, the dietitian will work with you to define the appropriate action plan and recommendations. The dietitian will also provide you with teaching tools, in-house documents and practical applications to help you reach your goal.
What will my virtual kinesiology assessment look like?
Your 45-minute fitness assessment will review your current level of physical activity, your fitness and injury history, as well as discuss your health and wellness goals. Following this review, your kinesiologist will proceed with a virtual fitness evaluation, primarily observing and evaluating proper body movements. The results will help determine which areas are stronger and which can be improved through physical activity. You’ll also have the opportunity to discuss and review a personalized home exercise program, discuss past or current injuries and injury prevention or anything else exercise related.
On what platform will my virtual appointments be completed?
You will be given the option of completing your virtual appointments either by phone or a secure video conferencing platform supported by TELUS Health, accessible from your computer, smartphone or tablet. Your device just needs to be equipped with a camera and microphone. You also need access to a high-speed internet connection.
48 hours prior to your virtual appointment, you will receive a confirmation email including instructions on how to attend. Curious to learn more? Watch this short video.
How do I access my results?
Your results will be uploaded as usual on your confidential, online results portal, along with personalized recommendations from our experts. During your virtual feedback consultation, your physician will discuss results and formulate a strategy for mitigating any health risks.
What can I expect from an in-person appointment at Medisys?
As we progress back to offering our full suite of core services – high-quality comprehensive, preventive healthcare – we are doing so with guidelines and measures in place to help keep our clinics safe and our patients and employees healthy.
- COVID-19 screening: You will be screened for risk factors and symptoms of COVID-19 when booking your appointment and before entering the clinic, and your temperature will be taken. If screening reveals that you are at risk for COVID-19, you will be referred to a COVID-19 testing centre.
- Hygiene and physical distancing protocol: Handwashing and sanitizing will be required before entering, and upon leaving the clinic. Frequently touched surfaces will be sanitized multiple times per day, and patient appointments will be staggered throughout the day to ensure that patient flow allows for the least number patients in the waiting room at one time. Physical distancing will still be maintained at your Medisys clinic, with PPE used for the safe delivery of in-person services by nurses and doctors.
- PPE (personal protective equipment): For procedures that call for close contact between patient and physician or nurse, PPE will be worn by both yourself and your Medisys physician. You’ll be asked to wear a non-surgical mask at all times during your visit, keeping your mouth and nose covered at all times. If you do not have your own mask, we will provide you with a cloth mask upon your arrival at the clinic.
Please visit our COVID-19 webpage to learn more about all the safety measure we have put in place to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
How do I know I’m getting the best value from the virtual preventive health assessment?
The virtual PHA is Medisys’s way of serving your health needs, while keeping you safe. Numerous studies have found that virtual consults can successfully replace office visits in many situations without compromising the quality of care and communication between patient and physician. For instance, the American Journal of Managed Care published a multi-year study revealing that 62% of responding patients reported the quality of virtual video visits was no different from that of office visits, and 68% of patients rated virtual video visits at 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale.
Your virtual PHA is completed with your Medisys experts, and we sincerely trust that it will meet your needs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thank you for doing your part to help stop the spread of COVID-19. If you have any additional questions about Medisys’s virtual PHA, please contact us.
We look forward to meeting with you virtually or in person in the coming weeks.
